Why is NIPT Preferred?
NIPT is performed to safely and early evaluate the risk of the baby carrying certain genetic and chromosomal diseases during pregnancy.
The primary reasons for preference are:
- Performed from maternal blood
- Does not harm the baby
- Can be applied in the early stages of pregnancy
- Provides high accuracy, especially for Trisomy 21, Trisomy 18, and Trisomy 13
- Offers the opportunity to evaluate more genetic conditions in expanded panels
With some advanced comprehensive NIPT panels, not only basic trisomies but also:
- Sex chromosome abnormalities
- Rare autosomal aneuploidies
- Deletions / duplications
- Microdeletion syndromes
- Some hereditary and de novo genetic diseases
can also be screened.
